SUMMARY:Vaux's Swifts - Sept 4th
DESCRIPTION:This year CCBA/LCAS will host the first Bon Voyage to Vaux’s Swift events outside Agate Hall on UO campus at sunset\, on Friday September 4. Vaux’s Swifts use the Agate Hall chimney to roost for the night during their migration. \nIt is fascinating to observe the swifts as they swirl above and gather before flying off to Central and South America for the winter. We may see thousands of birds funneling down into the chimney\, but on any given evening there is no guarantee! \nLook for the CCBA/LCAS banner at the 17th and Agate parking lot north of Agate Hall. Stop by and enjoy this annual natural phenomenon. It’s free! Non-birders and children may be enticed to join you if you add a trip to Prince Puckler’s ice cream and/or the nearby playground to your evening’s agenda. \nFMI: 541.343.8664 \nFMI: Vaux Swift Information

SUMMARY:1st Saturday Birding
DESCRIPTION:Our next first Saturday bird outing will be taking place on September 5th at 8:30 AM. These birding opportunities are intended to center women\, BIPOC\, and LGBTQIA+ folks.  We will be meeting at the Jasper Road Trailhead in Springfield here: https://goo.gl/maps/WoVpjdcHGhGUY8kH8. \nWe will walk on the Mill Race path towards the Middle Fork Trail and do a small river loop. This walk is on maintained trails and paths. The paths are flat (29-foot elevation gain in total) and paved. The loop is 2 miles long. There is a gender-neutral public restroom at the trailhead. \nWe plan to bird for at least two hours. The forecast is currently predicting a temperate and drizzly morning\, but conditions may change. Please check the forecast before the walk and bring appropriate gear to be comfortable (rain gear\, brimmed hat\, extra water\, etc.). We will meet rain or shine. \n\nWe will have one extra pair of binoculars available\, a scope to share with folks\, and a couple of field guides. Please let us know if you have any questions or if you have an accessibility need that you would like to share with us. Please let us know if you plan to attend. \nThanks!\nSora (they/them) and Beatrice (she/they) \n\nIf you have any questions or would like to sign up to receive regular updates about these outings\, please email  1stsatbirdwalks@ccbirdalliance.org.

SUMMARY:Beaked Whales with Bob Pittman
DESCRIPTION:The Coast to Cascades Bird Alliance is presenting a really unusual and superbly interesting program on September 22. You will meet Robert Pitman\, a guy who is the new Jacque Cousteau. He travels the world looking for and studying marine mammals\, including these almost unheard-of creatures called “beaked whales.” In this talk\, we’ll take a deep dive into their weird and wonderful world. \nAlthough beaked whales (Ziphiidae) are common and widespread in all the world’s oceans\, few people have ever heard of them\, much less seen one. They are the least-known\, large animals on the planet\, and three species have never been identified alive in the wild. They are also amazingly diverse. With at least 24 described species\, they represent one quarter of the world’s known cetaceans (whales\, dolphins and porpoises). \nFrom 1976-2019\, Bob worked as a marine ecologist for NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service in La Jolla\, California. He participated in over 170 scientific research cruises in all the oceans of the world\, including more than 30 trips to Antarctica. He has published over 150 papers in the peer-reviewed literature and co-authored two editions of a Guide to Marine Mammals of the World. \nCome to the Campbell Center\, 155 High St.\, Eugene\, on September 22. The doors open at 6:30. The program begins at 7:00. There will be a zoom link available on the CCBA website about one week before the event. \nFor more info\, see Program Meetings
